AI & the PYP Collaborative Planning Process

IB Global Conference Presentation, Daegu, 2024

A colleague and I presented how our school explored AI tools to support the development of our collaborative planning process. Structures and systems were created to move away from a cooperative approach planning to true collaboration, which was enhanced by the use of AI tools. This included focusing on the depth of the transdisciplinary learning experiences for students while honouring the expertise of subject specialists. This presentation shared our experience and highlighted some of the key challenges and possible solutions for successful collaboration amongst subject specialists and homeroom teachers, assisted by AI.

Evidencing Learning

Parent Workshop, International School of Busan, 2024

We run a monthly series of parent workshops related to different aspects of our school's programmes. At times it may be programme specific, such as The PYP Exhibition, but at other times it is school wide and I work collaboratively with the other IB coordinators to plan this sessions. This workshop outlined our assessement policy and practices in the PYP, MYP and DP, making connections to our guiding statements and the IB philosophy.

Making the PYP Happen: Implementing Agency

Category 1 PYP Workshop, Incheon, Korea, 2023

This is an example of a PYP workshop that I have recently facilitated at a regional workshop in Incheon, South Korea. While the IB has session guidelines to ensure consistency in the conceptual understandings that are explored, workshop leaders have freedom to create resources and materials to best meet the needs of their participants and the context of the workshop. I have been a PYP workshop leader since 2011 and find preparing and participating in these sessions to be a rewarding experience - I always come away with a richer appreciation and understanding of the programme.

Montessori Model United Nations

International School of Geneva, 2014-2022

While working with students on a number of projects related to the United Nations' goals for sustainable development, I wanted to find a way to introduce the idea of collaboratively solving problems with students in a more systematic manner. The Montessori Model United Nations has a philosophy closely aligned to the PYP and was a natural fit for our school. After starting the MMUN at our school with a colleague, I became the coordinator of programme which grew to include two teams, one for the primary students and another for the MYP students.

Learning Pod Project

International School of Geneva, 2018

Exploring ways to promote learner agency in preparation for the enhanced PYP, we wanted to take a closer look at the impact of our organisational structures on student learning. I coordinated and led an action research project in 2018 which saw the creation of a temporary learning space within the school, called the Learning Pod. The learners, from Years 3 to 6 volunteered with their families to take part along with colleagues who served as mentors. The curriculum and the daily plans were co-created by the children and the mentors and data was collected throughout the project.

The findings from this project were shared in this paper.
